Angel

Angel may be predominantly aiming for coffee drinkers, but lovers of a good cuppa tea would not be disappointed with the choice on offer. Located inside a former church (aptly named) Angel certainly makes for an eye-catching venue. Not only does it consist of a spacious inside area (given the original purpose of he building the high ceilings are to be expected) but also a large green outside area that looks and feels like a small park. Quite a unique selling point for the place, especially when you consider its central city location right outside the Waterside shopping centre.

Both inside and outside the atmosphere is calm, homely and even ever so slightly bohemian without being intimidating. Of course there is a wide range of coffee and an impressive selection of light meals and cakes. Tea drinkers like us will certainly feel welcome at Angel as well as there are an impressive twenty different kind of tea on offer varying from the traditional (English Breakfast) to the modern (Rooibos) to the more extraordinary (Cactus anyone?) The coffee venue is able to offer to offer such a wide range through its affiliation with Suki Tea. A nationwide importer and distributor of organic teas. This means the range of teas is wide, but not unique. Not necessarily a problem, mind. The contemporary design of Suki's "corporate look" tea pots even happen to really suit the venue and its slightly younger clientele.

I decided to try the cactus tea which is actually surprisingly nice. Light and fruity without being overwhelmingly sweet. It still contains the mild kick you would expect from, say, an earl grey or English breakfast. All the food in Angel isn't prepared in the coffee house itself but by local caterers. This, as well as the tea coming from a national chain, may lack a sense of authenticity but at the same time ensures that both the food and the quality is of a very high standard which may not be obtained normally by a place that primarily specialises in coffee. All in all Angel offers a more than satisfactory tea-drinking experience in an unusual and youthful environment. Angel often stay open late even hosts occasional nights of live music. Not for conservative tea room lovers, but definitely a place worth visiting.
